Madame LaLaurie, el personaje real de Kathy Bates en ‘American Horror Story Coven’

Delphine LaLaurie, más conocida como Madame LaLaurie y más tarde como La carnicera de Nueva Orleans, nació en esta ciudad en 1775 en una familia adinerada. Después de enviudar dos veces, contrajo matrimonio en tercera nupcias con el médico Louis LaLaurie y el matrimonio se hizo famoso por sus lujosas fiestas.

En 1833 sucedió el primer trágico suceso. Varios vecinos vieron como una esclava, de apenas ocho años, peinaba a Delphine cuando le dio un tirón a su cabello. LaLaurie golpeó a la niña que intentó escapar aterrada. La ama la persiguió hasta la azotea de la mansión, la arrojó hacia un patio interior y ordenó al resto de esclavos que la enterraran. Uno de los vecinos denunció los hechos a la policía, que no hizo nada al tratarse de una esclava.

Sin embargo, un juez, enemigo del marido de Delphine, les castigó con 500.000 dólares de multa y ordenó que todos los esclavos del matrimonio fuesen subastados y cambiados de familia. Por este hecho, el esposo se marchó y nunca más se supo de él. La propia familia de Delphine compró los esclavos y se los devolvió a la protagonista de esta historia que descargó toda su ira contra ellos.

Un año más tarde, un incendio en la cocina de la mansión hizo que los bomberos descubrieran todo lo que había ocurrido en esas cuatro paredes en los últimos meses. Cadáveres de esclavos, miembros amputados, pieles de carne humana… y los testimonios de los supervivientes: «Llegó a abrir por el abdomen a una de sus esclavas, y, tras destriparla, ató los intestinos a las muñecas de la mujeres. También operaba a sus esclavos cambiándoles el sexo, les taladraba agujeros en los testículos, los decapitaba y amontonaba las cabezas, conservaba los corazones y los cerebros, les arrancaba las uñas, desollaba a las mujeres y se disfrazaba con su piel, les metía heces en la boca y se la cosía después, o les arrancaba los ojos, entre otros trágicos sucesos.

LaLaurie pudo escapar en el incendio y se cree que huyó en un barco a Francia donde acabó sus días con su familia, dejando atrás una de las historias más atroces que ha dado para libros, películas y ahora, el personaje que Kathy Bates interpretará en American Horror Story Coven.

La casa, tras ser una escuela y un bloque de apartamentos, la compró el actor Nicolas Cage en 2007 y la tuvo que vender dos años después por los sucesos que allí ocurren: ruidos inexplicables, lamentos y formas extrañas. Actualmente, se ha convertido en una atracción turística y se realizan tours paranormales.
